The Little Pine Tree

A Story of a Lonely Pine Tree and a Little Boy

It’s Raining!

tumblr_ls3dk0S0nS1qcg3zwo1_500It’s raining! Some of my worst memories as a child. Those days that were depressingly gloomy and boring. Don’t we all detest the feeling of boredom? Of course the Little Pine Tree must have felt the same way since the continuous downpour of water kept all his friends away. The birds, huddled in their nest, the foxes in their dens the bunnies in their holes. All waiting for the rain to stop. Even the Carpenter’s boy stayed at home. But why? isn’t our God a good and loving God? Indeed He is. So if rain is good and boredom is bad what is my problem?

The problem is a limited perspective. As a child my whining complaints of boredom only elicited a reprimand from my parents, usually my mother. No creative alternatives offered other than a stern encouragement to play with the many toys I had received from “Santa” that previous Christmas. So what does God say about boredom? First, let’s understand what the definition of the word “boredom” is:

Boredom = A state of malaise close to anxiety, a feeling of emptiness

I believe if we take a moment to see what the Bible has to say we’ll find a number of answers. One that immediately comes to mind is Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This sure is a great answer. It is the solution the Lord has created for us when its raining. It a time to look to God, to pray and bring our bored heart to Him with thanksgiving. Unfortunately my mother only pointed me to worldly solutions. And as we grow up that’s exactly what we run to, yet with the same unsatisfactory result.

So if its raining in your neck of the woods or forest, as was the case for the Little Pine Tree, obey what our loving Savior has to say through the scriptures. Present your request to God with thanksgiving and He’ll take your boredom away, even if its raining.

Shalom
